Did you know that dragonflies capture and eat butterflies? Here is a picture of all that is left of an Eastern Tailed-Blue after a hungry dragonfly devoured it.

Can you tell my first grade class why we call these beautiful creatures butterflies, and not flutterbys?

There are a lot of theories about the origin of the word Butterfly, but the one that makes the most sense to me is that a very common butterfly in Great Britain (perhaps the Cabbage White?) had a slightly yellowish, almost buttery look to it. The species was evidently so common that people remarked that they would swarm like flies. You can see how this all added up…
