2010 FIELD TRIP REPORTS

Johnsonville State Historic Park, Humphreys County Report

This was a hazy day for a field trip with approaching rain, wind 3-5 mph and 69-70 degrees. The birds were numerous including Hermit thrush, Prothonotary warbler, Yellow-rumped warbler, 4 species of woodpecker (Downy, Hairy, Red-bellied, Red-headed) and Blue-gray gnatcatcher. We saw Zebra Swallowtail (1), Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (5), Falcate Orangetip (county record, 15 male, 1 female), Eastern Tailed-Blue (1 male), Question Mark (1) and 17 duskywings, for a total of six species, 41 individuals. There were two participants: Donna Ward and Rita Venable (reporting). Theda Young found the Question Mark.

Long Hunter State Park, Couchville Glade Report

This was a beautiful day for a field trip, sunny, wind 3-5 mph and 75-79 degrees. The glade cresses were just coming into bloom, about 2 weeks later than normal was the consensus. The glade savory was up, but not blooming yet. We saw two Falcate Orangetips (1 male, 1 female), one Sleepy Orange, one Spring Azure (male) and two, possibly three, Goatweed Leafwings (male), a total of four species, six individuals. There were five participants: Jason Allen, Sharon Cardin, Darel Hess, Linda Robertson and Rita Venable (reporting).

The glade cress was blooming, but not in many areas.

Did you know glade cress not only smells good, but is edible? Just a tiny sample.

A forester moth lands on Darel’s hat.

Sharon did get a photo of the Goatweed Leafwing before it flew. You can just see it in the right corner of this photo.

Thanks to Jason who let us see the tree on his property where he saw anglewings before.
